Good oral health rarely comes down to one dramatic change. It is the quiet, everyday habits that protect your teeth and gums for a lifetime. Here are five worth building into your routine.
1. Brush properly, twice a day
Two minutes, morning and night, with a fluoride toothpaste. Angle the brush towards the gum line and use gentle circular motions rather than hard scrubbing, which can wear enamel and irritate gums.
2. Clean between your teeth
Brushing reaches only about three of the five surfaces of each tooth. Flossing or using interdental brushes once a day clears the gaps where decay and gum disease most often begin.
3. Be mindful of sugar and acid
It is the frequency of sugary or acidic snacks, more than the amount, that drives decay. Try to keep them to mealtimes and rinse with water afterwards.
4. Stay hydrated
Saliva is your mouth's natural defence, washing away food and neutralising acid. Drinking water through the day keeps it flowing.
5. Keep your check-ups
Regular examinations catch small problems before they become painful or expensive. For most people, every six months is right.
None of these habits is complicated, but together they are the foundation of a healthy smile.
