Gum health is too often treated as a purely local concern. A growing body of evidence suggests its impact reaches well beyond the mouth.
More than bleeding gums
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, but the inflammation it generates does not stay confined to the gums.
Systemic associations
Research has linked periodontal disease with cardiovascular conditions, poorer glycaemic control in diabetes, and adverse outcomes in pregnancy. While association is not the same as causation, the consistency of these findings is striking.
The two-way street with diabetes
The relationship with diabetes is particularly well established and bidirectional: poorly controlled diabetes worsens gum disease, and active periodontal disease can make blood sugar harder to manage.
What this means in practice
Caring for your gums is part of caring for your whole body. Regular periodontal assessment, good home care, and prompt treatment of early disease are worthwhile investments in overall health.
